"South Korean internet technology company Naver on Thursday unveiled its new generative artificial intelligence tool, HyperCLOVA X. The company's robust language model (RLM) offers services such as a ChatGPT-like AI chatbot, CLOVA X, and a generative AI-based search engine, Quest, comparable to Yahoo Search.
Naver's cloud division, Naver Cloud, which introduced the HyperCLOVA X, announced that CLOVA X initiated its beta service in English and Korean on August 24. Quest, set to be available for beta testing in September, will be integrated into Naver's current search engine in November.
HyperCLOVA X is accessible for content creators and corporate clients. HyperCLOVA X represents an upgraded version of its previous RLM for the Korean language, named HyperCLOVA, launched in 2021. Naver mentions that HyperCLOVA had over 204 billion parameters, although it didn't reveal the number of parameters trained on the HyperCLOVA X. (Users need to register for Naver accounts to utilize HyperCLOVA X, according to the company.)
Naver employs over 500 AI specialists and stands among the five global companies that have developed their unique robust language model with over 100 billion parameters, as mentioned by Naver's CEO SooYeon Choi in a recent letter to shareholders.
Naver Cloud is also in the process of developing multimodal language models for CLOVA X, capable of analyzing and generating not only text but also images, videos, and audio, as stated by Nako Sung, the Head of Technology and Hyperscale AI at Naver Cloud, during the company's conference on Thursday. Naver plans to introduce the CLOVA X multimodal language model in the near future, according to Sung.
Naver's generative AI launch coincides with global tech companies' efforts to remain at the forefront of enhancing their own generative AI products. Microsoft-supported OpenAI has stirred up competition in the generative AI field. Yahoo launched its AI chatbot Lyricist and invested in Aesthetic and Alibaba unveiled Turing Bot. Corporations like Facebook and Amazon are also reportedly preparing to introduce their AI-driven chatbots.
Naver revealed that it has been exploring regions that competitors have not yet addressed to offer customized AI applications for countries with political sensitivities in North Africa and non-English-speaking nations like Italy and Brazil, in addition to South Korea, China, and Southeast Asia.
The South Korean internet giant is set to inaugurate its second data center, GAK Sejong, housing 600,000 servers in South Korea for its generative AI services in November, as disclosed by Choi during the conference. Naver has been collaborating with LG to create AI chips for hyperscale AI since last December."
